Best & Worst of 2017 — from silver hair to pickleball

Sunday , December 31, 2017 - 12:00 AM

By TX. Staff

Time to bid a fond farewell to 2017, the year of fanny packs, glitter boots and emojis starring in the movies.

We’re taking a look back at the highs and lows of the past year in our annual TX. Best & Worst survey. Our staff members voted on the things they liked best and least about 2017’s movies, trends, music, TV shows and news events.

This is by no means a scientific survey, just a tally of opinions by the TX.ers who chose to participate. And since the things that some of us love are the things others cannot stand, a few items show up in both the “best” and “worst” categories.

Take a walk down memory lane and see how our picks rate with yours.

• Best overall film

“Beauty and the Beast”

2. “Spider-Man: Homecoming”

“Marvel did a fantastic job introducing Spider-Man in a fun and interesting way and effectively avoided making him seem like ‘just another superhero,’ " said Sierra Clark of Venture High School.

• Worst overall film

“The Emoji Movie”

“Seriously, I'm perplexed why anyone would waste time to watch an hour-and-a-half of mediocre content and shameless advertising unless they were duped into it. Unfortunately, I was one of those people (it was the first movie at a drive-in),” Clark said.

Or, as London Cummings of Fremont High said, “just horrendous.”

• Best comedy

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”

2. “The Lego Batman Movie”

2. “Cars 3”

• Best movie trailer

“Avengers: Infinity War”

Fall Out Boy knows exactly what we need, and they just keep giving it to us! No matter who you are — a diehard who's been here since the beginning, a new convert to the band's post-hiatus glory, a pop fan who recognizes the group from radio trends gone by — you're going to need to hear this album come January, I promise!”
