LAYTON — An accidental golden goal is still a golden goal.

Sophomore Abbi Sanford lofted a ball from about 40 yards out that turned out to be the game-winner midway through the second period of extra time and Fremont defeated Northridge 3-2 on a blustery Thursday afternoon.

“I thought it was going to hit the crossbar or something,” said Sanford, who admitted she was merely trying to send it into the box for someone else to finish.

Did she know, at any point, as she saw the ball travel toward the goal that it was going to go in?

“When it went in, I did,” she said simply, before breaking out in laughter.

How did it feel to win a game in such exciting fashion?

“Lit,” she said before again breaking out in laughter.

The victory avenged Fremont’s loss to Northridge earlier in the season while powering the Silver Wolves past the Knights in the Region 1 standings. Fremont now has 16 points with the potential for 25 by the end of the season while Northridge has 15 with the potential for 24.

“It was a huge win,” Fremont coach Kelly Parke said. “I told these girls every game from here on out could be deciding for second or watching the playoffs from home, so three points is really big right now.”

Fremont survived a pair of Kendell Petersen goals. The BYU commit scored less than a minute into each half, her 10th and 11th goals of the season. Petersen has scored seven of Northridge’s eight goals in its last three games.

Sidney East scored Fremont’s first goal of the game in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick by Ambree Gibson. The Silver Wolves equalized again in the 69th minute following another corner kick when Sierra Thornock took the corner and Brynlee Meyerhoffer punched it in.
